Hi friends,
This is just a quick letter to let you know that the paperback edition of House of Hunger is officially on shelves! You can nab a copy wherever books are sold. Huge thank you to my team at Berkley for getting this book on shelves.
I also want to thank you all for holding space for my weird and bloody nightmare of a book. I truly worried that no one would read House of Hunger—I thought it was too strange and unruly and was certain it would alienate readers (and maybe it did alienate a few people and that’s okay too!). But to those of you who have bought or borrowed House of Hunger, recommended it to friends, created fan art, written fan fiction, or even just hit like on a post, thank you. I appreciate you all so, so much.
What I’ve Been Reading
Earthlings by Sayaka Murata: The weirdest and arguably most graphic book I’ve read in a very long time. Check the content warnings on this one. It’s not the kind of book you enjoy, per se, but I recommend it if you can handle the subject matter. And if the subject matter is too much for you, check out Convenience Store Woman by the same author. It’s also very good!
Y/N by Esther Yi: Literary fiction about a fan who stalks and obsesses over a K-pop star. Beautifully written!
Alone With You in the Ether by Olivie Blake: I'm still reading this one, but I had to mention it here because I’m so engrossed. I can’t stop thinking about it.
What I’ve Been Watching
I recently went on a bit of a movie marathon because I find that when I’m deep in edits it’s easier for me to digest stories visually. But before I dive into my favorites, is anyone over on Letterboxd? Here’s my profile if you’d like to give me a follow!
Aftersun: I cried my eyes out after finishing this. I can’t say I recommend this movie to people who’ve recently lost a parent, but it was a perfect film nonetheless.
Dungeons and Dragons: The only other major franchise movie I’ve had this much fun watching is Barbie.
Barbie: This is one of my new favorite movies of all time.
Uncut Gems: I didn’t know it was possible to hold your breath for almost three hours straight. Huh.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer: This one was grim and absurd so naturally, I loved it. I think Barry Keoghan is one of my favorite actors alive. I can’t wait to see him in Saltburn.
Midnight Mass: Another one that made me cry. The script is beautifully written, and I love the way this show grapples with themes of guilt, death, and existentialism.
Red, White, and Royal Blue: Heartfelt and swoony! This movie encapsulates everything I love about 90s rom-coms. I really enjoyed it!
What I’ve Been Listening To
The Publishing Rodeo Podcast: I know I mentioned this podcast in my last letter, but I won’t stop recommending it until all 2,000 of you tune in. It really is that good.
The Uncut Gems Soundtrack: This is genuinely such a bop.
San Francisco by Scott McKenzie: I’ve never been to San Francisco in my life, but I’m obsessed with this song nonetheless.
The Oppenheimer Soundtrack: I have listened to “Can You Hear the Music” so many times I hear it in my sleep. No complaints.
I’d love to know what you’re reading/watching/listening to!
Until next time,
Alexis
I’m currently reading House of Hunger and thoroughly love it! Beautiful pic of you and Eli!
I’m currently reading The Year of the Witching, love it! And I will make research about the book for my study in Indonesia, I really need more information about you and the book. Can I send you an email to ask some questions regarding my research?
